April 2013 – Over the past several years, TWM has performed value engineering on various projects in Missouri, teaming with heavy construction firm Fred Weber, Inc. In each project, Fred Weber asked TWM to re-design a project initially designed by another firm, so that it could be built more economically. The Missouri Department of Transportation encourages “value engineering” by splitting project savings with the contracting team. Now, TWM and Fred Weber have an opportunity to do similar work for the Illinois Department of Transportation near Morton, IL.
After Fred Weber, Inc. was awarded a contract to reconstruct parts of I-74, I-155 and their interchange near Morton, the company suggested ways that IDOT might save money through value engineering. IDOT was interested. Fred Weber then hired TWM who formed a team with two other consultants to value engineer the project in a very tight timeline. That effort is currently underway and will likely include the re-design of bridges and MSE walls, including those over W. Jackson and W. Jefferson Streets, staging construction layouts for three separate VE stages, and evaluating site drainage for each of those stages.
