Union Road Bridge Over I-55
Bridge engineering services were performed by TWM while working as a consultant to a local construction company. TWM’s design modifications saved the Missouri Department of Transportation $430,000 from the original bid after the redesign of the Union Road Bridge over I-55 in St. Louis County.
The original proposal specified dual, horizontally curved bridges. Each consisted of two spans, but of different overall length. TWM instead proposed a single, two-span, horizontally curved bridge with spans shortened by using mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls in front of each abutment and forming a u-shape around the approach fill. The new design saved money by reducing the length of the bridge by more than 100 feet, reducing the width by four feet, and eliminating a girder line
