Hopewell Road Bridge Replacement
LOCATION: St. Charles, MO
CLIENT: St. Charles County Highway Department
TWM provided structural bridge design services for the County of St. Charles when they required the widening and reconstruction of a structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge on Hopewell Road in unincorporated St. Charles County. The purpose of the project was to increase safety for the traveling public and to continue improvements aligned with the County’s Transportation Thoroughfare Plan. The project replaced the existing 20’ span steel beam bridge with a triple 8’x5’ box culvert, approximately 48’ long. Hydraulics were completed to properly size the culvert for its given drainage area.
In addition to the original engineering designs, KCI Construction requested TWM complete an alternate design for this project. The original design was comprised of a cast-in-place triple 8’ x 5’ box culvert with the contractor’s option of using precast units. At the contractor’s request, to ease construction efforts, eliminate utility conflicts, and shorten roadway closure time, TWM redesigned the original plans to a culvert of corrugated metal pipe with concrete, or riprap, slope protection.
