I-64 Bridges Over MetroLink

This project entailed the replacement of the two superstructures carrying I-64 over the MetroLink light rail tracks near Baugh Avenue in East St. Louis. The bridges are three-span, deep plate girder bridges with a severe 66 degree skew that follows the tracks. Other unique aspects to this project included inspection of the existing structures during nighttime hours when MetroLink was not operational, and preparing a Traffic Management Plan to allow two lanes of I-64 traffic to remain open at all times. Special consideration was also required in the bridge design because of MetroLink’s operating schedule and the close proximity of the structures to the MetroLink tracks and the overhead electrical power system.
Due to the project’s complexity and the agencies satisfaction with the design team’s work, IDOT chose to also retain the team for Phase III services – reviewing shop drawings and answering field questions through construction.
