Watershed Trail

TWM designed the extension of the Watershed Trail from Union Street to High Street in Edwardsville, Illinois. The 0.36-mile asphalt Watershed Trail extension creates a 5.1 mile continuous path from Roxana to Edwardsville, providing a direct connection to the Edwardsville Business District, an area previously underserved by multi-use paths. The Watershed Trail also connects users to 75 miles of trails throughout the region. The trail extension involved the design of a large block gravity retaining wall, which was placed adjacent to a portion of the trail to preserve existing vegetation and large trees that otherwise would have been removed. TWM also designed two raised crosswalks, one at Union Street and one at High Street. The raised crosswalks provide a safe crossing for pedestrians, while acting as traffic slowing devices for vehicles. Another design consideration at the Union Street crossing was the lack of sight distance for vehicles approaching the pedestrian crossing. To address this problem, TWM designed advance warning beacons along the roadway, which alert vehicles when a pedestrian is using the crossing.
