2016 Snapshot:
For 80 years, TWM has helped shape the infrastructure that keeps communities and commerce moving. The South Harbor Terminal at America’s Central Port is an impressive example of that legacy in action. More than a transportation hub, the South Harbor Terminal is a major multimodal gateway positioned at a strategic crossroads of commerce, where six Class I railroads and four interstate highways converge with the river.
Located along the banks of the Mississippi River in Granite City, Illinois, the terminal facility seamlessly connects river, rail, and roadway systems — strengthening the Midwest’s link to national and global markets. At the core of this design-build project is an enclosed rail unloading building with an underground rail pit and advanced drag conveyor system. Elevated and inclined lighted conveyors stretch from riverside to shore, feeding grain commodities onto a closed-cell platform. Supporting it all is an engineered truss structure with dust collection systems and a hydraulic winch system designed for efficiency, durability, and long-term growth. TWM was involved through all facets of structural design and also provided topographic and construction layout services.
Successful infrastructure often operates quietly in the background. Yet projects like this one reflects TWM’s enduring commitment to thoughtful engineering, regional economic development, and forward-looking solutions. For Madison County and the greater St. Louis region, it reinforces how the Midwest’s role in waterway commerce offers opportunities and impact far beyond the riverbank.
