From Employee to Owner: Creating a Stake for Success
By introducing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) program, TWM offers employees an ownership stake in the company through the gift of stock shares allocated based on total compensation, including bonuses and overtime. Unlike traditional stock options, ESOPs grant actual shares, allowing employees to realize financial benefits as the company grows. Historically, as TWM has expanded, the value of these shares has increased, providing significant financial advantages to employees. ESOPs can also be a valuable component of an employee’s retirement plan, offering an additional source of income in retirement.
TWM’s Values & Vision Contributed to Establishing an ESOP
Throughout its 78 years, TWM has transitioned through different corporate structures, moving from a sole proprietorship to a partnership, and eventually becoming a privately held corporation with both majority and junior stockholders in the 1990s. This evolution allowed TWM to flourish, earning respect and recognition across the St. Louis metropolitan area. As TWM achieved significant success, our leadership acknowledged the need for further evolution to ensure future growth.
In 2003, TWM made a bold decision to implement an ESOP. This move was motivated by a mix of strategic, financial, and cultural factors. One objective was to boost employee engagement and retention by giving workers a stake in the company, fostering a sense of ownership and alignment with its goals. The ESOP also served as a vital tool for succession planning, enabling owners to transition the business to employees while, at the same time, the company could potentially enjoy tax benefits. Ultimately, the decision to become an ESOP company reinforces TWM’s commitment to creating a collaborative and sustainable workplace culture, where employees are not just contributors, but also valued stakeholders in the company’s future.
Connecting TWM’s ESOP With its Organizational Mission
TWM’s mission, “Exceptional Service. Nothing Less,” captures both the leadership’s mission and the values of TWM employee-owners. For TWM team members, the ESOP significantly enhances their sense of ownership and engagement. By strengthening this connection to the company’s mission and providing financial incentives, the ESOP fosters a more dedicated, responsible, and satisfied team. This increased sense of initiative benefits employees and drives overall success, enriches the company culture, and promotes a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
TWM employee-owners recognize that their contributions directly affect the company’s performance and, in turn, their own financial well-being. This shared sense of responsibility and trust enhances teamwork and cooperation across all of TWM’s administrative, engineering, and geospatial groups. Ownership has its privileges!
Driving Employee Engagement & Loyalty Through TWM’s ESOP
By creating a direct connection between employees’ contributions and their financial rewards, an ESOP enhances engagement and loyalty. TWM’s ESOP attracts and retains top talent by aligning compensation and reward systems with our mission and values. The opportunity to become an owner can be a compelling part of a company’s value proposition, reflecting a commitment to rewarding hard work and dedication. This alignment supports our company’s core values: quality, relationships, stability, ambition, and loyalty.
TWM’s ESOP also increases transparency about company performance and financial health. Knowing that each employee-owner’s efforts can lead to a higher share value motivates each member to work harder and be more productive. This motivation often translates into higher levels of performance and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Employee-owners are more likely to go above and beyond in their roles when they see a direct link between their efforts and their financial benefits.
This openness can build trust between employee-owners and company leadership, fostering a more engaged and loyal team. Employee-owners who are well-informed and trust their leaders are more likely to feel connected to the company’s mission and committed to its success.
Looking Ahead: The Evolution & Growth of TWM’s ESOP
As TWM continues to grow, the ESOP will evolve alongside the company. While no one can predict the future, the strong performance history and clear direction provided by our leadership team indicate that TWM is poised for a bright future.
Our leadership consistently seeks out new and profitable opportunities in emerging markets, which will play a significant role in the ESOP’s evolution. It will not only benefit from increased profitability, but also provide a growing employee-owner engagement and investment in the company’s success. Because TWM has already established itself as a leader in engineering and geospatial services, we have a solid foundation to leverage as we enter new sectors. Our reputation for innovation and the effective use of technology positions us well to fully adapt and thrive in these new environments.
Ultimately, as TWM evolves, the enduring goals of our ESOP will serve as a vital component of our shared success, further motivating employee-owners to contribute to our continued growth and excellence.
